J.S. Bach School for Trombone

The J.S. Bach School for Trombone began as a practice project. I arranged the 15 two part Inventions BWV 772-786 and 15 three part Sinfonias BWV 787-801 to maintain Bach’s intervals between voices, a feature no other trombone arrangement of this music offers. To achieve this I simply lowered all 30 pieces a perfect fifth. That’s it; no octave displacements or crossing voices. These little gems are short and loaded with great imitative counterpoint that challenge the trombonist in the highest and lowest registers of the instrument. [Album note]
Carl Roskott: Works for Violin

Thrilled to announce the release of "Carl Roskott: Works for Violin," an album that has been years in the making! Besides being an associate conductor at the Eastern Music Festival in NC from 1977 to 1997, Carl Roskott was also on faculty at Northern Illinois University (1980-1991) and the University of Virginia (1991-2005), where he was my conducting and composition mentor. He wrote wonderful compositions for the Eastern Music Festival during the 1980s and 90s, including both works on this CD: Concerto for Violin Solo & Orchestra and Sonata for Violin & Piano. Featured on this album are violinist Akemi Takayama, pianist Silvan Negrutiu, and the Shenandoah Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. I can't thank all of them enough for their fantastic playing and their generous contributions to make this album possible. Paul Bowles: Complete Piano Works, Vol. 1

Celebrated for books such as The Sheltering Sky, Paul Bowles was one of a very select group of artists who excelled as both composer and writer. He was a distinctive and original composer and in the first of two volumes devoted to his complete piano works—both solo and duo—the music is grouped cyclically, stylistically or thematically. This selection includes works inspired by Latin American themes, some of which are among his most atmospheric, as well as the blues infused Six Preludes. The challenging Sonata for Two Pianos is one of the best-kept secrets of American piano music. Also included are pieces written for Bowles by Leonard Bernstein and Virgil Thomson.

The American writer and composer Paul Bowles spent much of his life in Morocco. He is primarily remembered for his novel The Sheltering Sky but also excelled as a composer in many forms. His piano music spans an impressive variety of styles and reflects his wide cultural interests. Among his most celebrated works is the brilliant, cornucopian Night Waltz. This second and final instalment of Bowles’ complete piano music also includes sequences of evocative travelogues and imaginative miniatures, the visionary and complex harmonies of Tamanar and the unorthodox, fragmentary, kaleidoscopic Sonatinas.

Sharing the honors on the solo piano pieces, they join forces for the Sonata for Two Pianos. Hailing from Armenian and Ukrainian families, these musicians were educated at the Moscow State Conservatory and came to the United States in the 1990s. Adolphus Hailstork: Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3

Professor of Music at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, Adolphus Hailstork has written three symphonies, the third of which is dedicated to the artists on this recording, David Lockington (“my most consistently supportive conductor”) and the Grand Rapids Symphony. In his notes for Symphony No. 3, Hailstork writes: “The goal in my Third Symphony was to write a piece that was lighter in approach than my second. I created a snappy little trumpet tune that intrigued me and used it as the point of departure.” Premièred in 1999, the Symphony No. 2 was inspired by a visit to Africa in the summer of 1996: “There I visited the forts along the coast of Ghana, and saw the dungeons where the slaves were held before being shipped overseas. I put my reaction to that sad scene in movement two of this symphony. In movement four I sought to reflect the determination of a people who had arrived in America as slaves, but struggled, with courage and faith, against numerous odds.” [From the publisher]

Ever since 16th century France the term tombeau (French for "tomb" or "tombstone") has denoted a set of poetic or musical compositions honoring the memory of a person, whether eminent or ordinary, real or imaginary. While the authorships of literary tombeaux were quite often collective, music tombeaux were usually created by individual composers and performers (i.e. Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin). It is no surprise that the death of the profoundly influential Claude Debussy (1862-1918) prompted Revue Musicale, a foremost music publication in Paris, to commission pieces from some leading European composers and performers, for a collection of works eulogizing the great composer. Each one of these musicians contributed to Tombeau in a unique and innately personal way, most of the works later becoming known as both individual pieces and parts of larger compositions). Encouraged by the success of Tombeau de Claude Debussy, Revue Musicale came up with another collection honoring the preeminent French composer and pedagogue Gabriel Faure (1845-1924). Composed by seven of Faure's best-known pupils (all French except for the Rumanian Enesco), the suite was completed and published by 1922, while the composer was still alive.

Amazing Grace: Organ Music of Adolphus Hailstork

A student of H. Owen Reed, Vittorio Giannini and David Diamond, Adolphus Hailstork has written numerous works for chorus, solo voice, various chamber ensembles, band and orchestra (his Symphony No. 1 can be heard on Albany TROY104 and works for chorus can be heard on TROY156). Significant performances by major orchestras (Philadelphia, Chicago and New York) have been conducted by leading names such as James dePriest, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim and Kurt Masur. Dr. Hailstork resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia and is Eminent Scholar and Professor of Music at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He also has a connection to our area in upstate New York; he writes, "I began taking organ lessons in the 1950s as a member of the boy's and men's choir of the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, New York. During my last two years in high school I served as the organist/choir director during the summer. Several decades later I returned to the instrument as organist/choir director at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, Virginia. In the 1990s I also resumed organ lessons with Dr. James Kosnik (the soloist on this CD), a colleague of mine on the faculty of Old Dominion University. I have written several works for my own service use at the Unitarian Church and for concert use for advanced performers such as Dr. Kosnik." [From the publisher]

Adolphus Hailstork’s “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes" is a cantata written for a tenor soloist, chorus, and accompaniment comprised of three sections. Words are taken from Psalms 121, 13, and 23. Hailstork composed this piece in memory of Undine Smith Moore, the "Dean of Black Women Composers."
